Carpal Tunnel

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common problem of the hand that occurs in a variety of patients. The condition is caused by the hand's median nerve having too much pressure on it. When this nerve becomes compressed, it can cause the hand to be numb or tingling. It can also cause the hand to be weak. The palm side of the hand is where the carpal tunnel can be found. It's a narrow area that's surrounded by both bones and ligaments.

Many things can lead to a patient developing carpal tunnel syndrome. Perhaps the most common cause is using the hand to perform repetitive motions. There are also some health problems that can cause it. If you are suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome, it can be important to get treatment for it to help with the pain and other symptoms. Call Dyker Heights Family Chiropractor in Brooklyn, NY, to have your case assessed and treated.

Carpal Tunnel Symptoms

Some people may start out with mild symptoms that eventually get worse. The first signs you may notice are tingling and numbness in the hand and/or the fingers. Carpal tunnel may also cause what feels like electric shocks in these fingers and the hand. You may have symptoms when you hold a small object like a book, hold your phone, or drive a vehicle. There may be feelings in your hand and fingers that are so strong they cause you to wake up. You may also have consistent numbness in your hand. You may start to drop things because of hand weakness.

Carpal Tunnel Mechanics

The median nerve is an important nerve that runs from the arm and into the passageway called the carpal tunnel, and then it goes into your hand. This nerve is how you can feel your hand on its palm side as well as in the fingers besides the pinkie. When this nerve gets pressure put on it, carpal tunnel can ensue. The nerve may get squeezed or irritated, and this can cause the syndrome. Many things can cause the irritation, including certain fractures and overuse. The syndrome can also be caused by a combination of different factors.
