Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has been on the rise as well as a larger classification of disorders, neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD) which may include attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, learning disabilities, intellectual disability (also known as mental retardation), conduct disorders, cerebral palsy, and impairments in vision and hearing. Causes include genetic, biologic and environmental factors. These factors come together and create a situation which may change the way our nervous system functions.  Some ingredients include prenatal, maternal stress and frequent infant and toddler illness and medication use. We can all agree of the increases of physical, chemical and mental stresses have increased significantly in recent times.  These stresses are absorbed through our nervous system, sometimes leading to over excitability.

We know that in ASD, the nervous system is greatly affected. Those with the disorder have increased sensitivity and excitability and less ability to focus, which can suggest a dysfunction of our autonomic nervous system, the part of our body that controls heart, blood pressure and many other important systems in our bodies. Many researchers feel that there is a relationship between the nervous system, movement, social skills, thinking ability and emotions.

Keeping the above in mind, a hyper excited nervous system and the relation of movement, cognitive function and emotions, Chiropractic and its relationship with the nervous system may a role in the care of those with ASD. Most of those with ASD have an overstressed nervous system in protection mode. Our bodies cannot be in protection and growth at the same time and a subluxation or misalignment of the spine interferes with our nervous system and locks us out from living our full potential. Chiropractic is not a treatment, cure, or anything for ASD, sensory challenges, ADHD, anxiety, or anything in between. We work on restoring balance, harmony and coordination to our central nervous system with gentle, specific adjustments to the spine to allow our nervous system to do the healing. Chiropractic allows our bodies to adapt and adjust to our environment internally and externally.
